The History of Football – From Ancient Games to Modern Global Football

What did the first football look like? Where were the first rules of football established? When did modern football emerge, and how does Bulgaria fit into the history of the global game? If you have asked yourself these questions but still don't know the answers, Fenshop has set out to inform fans of this beloved sport.
Today, football is one of the most popular sports in the world. Yet, behind the modern ball, professional stadiums, and major tournaments lies a history that began centuries ago.
There is no single game that can be called "the first football." Various cultures played ball games long before modern football was created. One of the oldest known predecessors is *cuju*, an ancient Chinese game involving kicking a ball with the feet. FIFA recognizes *cuju* as the earliest known ancestor of football, noting that it was popular as far back as the 2nd century BC. However, this does not mean that modern football originated in China. The game we know today is the result of a long evolution that reached Great Britain in the 19th century.

What was the first football like?
Our modern concept of a football is that of an object that is round, lightweight, water-resistant, and precisely balanced. In the past, however, a variety of materials were used for ball games. FIFA cites examples of early balls made from animal bladders encased in leather.

Leather is durable, but the ball can absorb water and become heavier. Even at the 1954 World Cup, the leather "Swiss World Champion" ball absorbed water during the rain-soaked final between West Germany and Hungary. FIFA notes that water-resistant leather balls did not appear until later.

Modern footballs typically use synthetic leather, a latex or butyl bladder, and several additional layers.

How has the football evolved?

The evolution of the ball is a perfect example of the development of the sport itself. At the first World Cup in 1930, leather balls of various designs were still in use. A dispute even arose regarding which ball to use for the final between Uruguay and Argentina, leading to a decision to use a different ball for each half.

The first World Cup ball without traditional laces appeared in 1950, and in the decades that followed, materials and construction continued to evolve alongside technology.

One of the most recognizable models is the adidas Telstar, used at the 1970 World Cup. Its black-and-white design—featuring 32 panels (12 pentagons and 20 hexagons)—was created to ensure the ball was more visible on television screens. From that point on, the football was no longer merely a piece of sports equipment; it became an icon of every major football tournament.

When did the first football rules appear?

In the 19th century, various versions of football were played in Great Britain. Some allowed the ball to be carried by hand, while others were closer to the football we know today. The problem was that if everyone played by different rules, it was difficult to establish a truly unified sport capable of growing internationally.

On October 26, 1863, The Football Association was founded in London. Its primary goal was to create a unified set of rules. Ebenezer Cobb Morley played a key role in drafting these initial regulations. The original code consisted of 13 rules and gradually laid the foundation for the football we know today.

An interesting fact is that one of the early debates centered on whether football should permit "hacking" (kicking an opponent in the legs). Ultimately, this practice was excluded from the rules.
In 1886, the IFAB (International Football Association Board) was established by the four British football associations; to this day, the IFAB remains the body with the authority to adopt and amend the Laws of the Game.
This is a significant part of football history because the rules—which began as an attempt by a few English clubs to reach a mutual understanding—gradually evolved into a universal system of play used worldwide. Today, technologies such as VAR (Video Assistant Referee) systems exist to determine with speed and accuracy whether an infringement has occurred in real time.

From British games to a global sport
Following the standardization of the rules, football began to spread rapidly beyond Great Britain. Clubs, national associations, and international competitions were established, and in 1904, FIFA (the International Federation of Association Football) was founded. The first World Cup took place in 1930, hosted by Uruguay; the hosts won the inaugural tournament, and football gradually transformed into a global phenomenon.

Where does Bulgaria stand in the world of football?
Bulgaria entered the international football scene relatively early. The national organisation was established in 1923; Bulgaria became a member of FIFA in 1924 and joined UEFA (the Union of European Football Associations) in 1954.
On the international stage, Bulgaria has participated in the World Cup seven times, achieving its best result—fourth place—in 1994. Another major success was the Olympic silver medal won in 1968. (You can read more about it in the History of Bulgarian football)

Football is about more than just players chasing a ball for 90 minutes. It leaves behind medals, trophies, badges, photographs, and other items that can transform mere statistics into tangible history. Take the football, for instance. Today, it is a high-tech piece of sports equipment. Over a century ago, it was a leather casing wrapped around an animal bladder. The evolution between the two represents more than just a design change; it embodies the history of the sport itself.
And that is precisely what makes football memorabilia so appealing to collectors.
An item may start out as a simple souvenir, but the story behind it transforms it into a collector's artefact. That is why, at Fenshop, we strive to offer high-quality, premium badges and football souvenirs for everyone.
