Making a Matrix Badge in 9 Steps
When it comes to badges of the highest quality and durability, there is no doubt – silicate (hard) enamel badges are the gold standard. They combine artistry, precision and exceptional durability over time. In this article, we will introduce you to what silicate enamel is and what are the steps that are taken to create a matrix badge of this type.
What is silicate (hard) enamel?
Silicate enamel, also known as hard enamel, is a glass-like material that is applied to a metal base and fired at high temperatures – between 720 and 780°C. This process creates an extremely durable and luxurious coating that does not fade, does not scratch easily and resists external influences over time.
There are two main types of silicate enamel:
• Transparent – reveals the texture of the metal underneath.
• Opaque – with rich and vibrant colors that completely cover the base.
Why is silicate enamel so valuable?
Making a silicate enamel badge is a complex, manual and time-consuming process that requires attention to every detail. That is why this type of badge is mainly used for official awards, corporate gifts and collector's purposes, where you are looking for not just a souvenir, but a work of art.
What are the steps in making a matrix badge with silicate enamel?
The process includes many stages that combine computer precision and hand-made:
1. Design and project
It all starts with a computer project design, consistent with strictly set parameters for shape, size and colors. Here the client works closely with a designer to achieve the desired vision.
2. Making a template and matrix
Next comes the making of a template and matrix from special steel, which will shape the face and back of the badge using an engraving machine.
*The design of the matrix is considered in detail so that it meets the needs of the client - this is the moment when discreet branding can be added to the back of the badge, without disturbing the vision of the front side.

3. Preparing the tooling ?
A cutting tool is created, through which the brass blank is cut. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc, chosen for its durability and good mechanical properties.
4. Pressing and cutting
The blank is pressed under enormous pressure, sometimes up to 1200 tons. This is in order to give the exact shape, then it is cut and chemically cleaned.
5. Enameling
This is where the real magic begins – the applied silicate enamel is applied by hand, then fired in a thermal oven. A separate firing is performed for each individual color, which requires extreme precision. Each color has a so-called appropriate temperature at which it should be fired, which is why the sequence of applying the color is of great importance.
6. Sanding and polishing
After firing, the badge undergoes manual sanding and secondary polishing, which gives it the typical crystal smoothness and shine.
7. Mounting and finishing
A pin, screw or other fastening mechanism is mounted, after which the badge is polished again by hand.

8. Electroplating
The final touch is the application of electroplating – gold, silver, nickel or copper, which emphasizes the details. Electroplating of badges is an electrochemical process for applying a thin but durable layer of metal to the base material to protect against corrosion and achieve a desired aesthetic appearance.
9. Packaging ?
The final step is cleaning the badge and preparing it for packaging and delivery.
*Packaging depends on the preferences and additional understanding of the manufacturer and the customer.
Making a matrix badge with silicate enamel is a process that requires passion for detail, patience and artistry. The result is a badge that not only looks elegant, but also tells a story - the story of hand-made, hard work and high quality.
